Dragons for Keeps Part 1
Dragons for Keeps
By Burner Fire
Part 1
I was sad and working the graveyard shift at Wendy’s all by myself, some people came by the drive thru ordering cookies and a frosty. At night we don’t serve sandwiches or cheeseburgers that much, barely anybody comes by. Then I saw her violet purple eyes they were piercing through the glass right at me. Her long raven black hair cascaded around her shoulders, her face was mostly in shadow with her hood pull over her head. I tried to ignore her, because the rule is not to serve walk ups, were not even suppose to open the window to them.
Only if I would of listen to that little rule, I went to the window and foolishly open it, “Sorry madam but we don’t serve walk ups, if you come back at 9 o’clock the lobby will be open and then you could order something.”
“Oh, I thought maybe I could get a glass of water,” she reached her hands up and played with a strand of black hair, her nails were eerie purple just like her eye’s, “but then again a rule is a rule.” she turn away her cloak billowed out catching some light, it has this glittering purple color to it.
“Wait,” I called out making her turn back, “If it’s just water I guess I could give you one but just this once.” She came back into the light of the drive thru, tears were falling down her face, ‘gee sh I didn’t know water meant so much to her.’
“Thank you so much,” she reached out and patted my hand it started to tingled, I pulled my hand away, “You’re so kind.”
“Your welcome,” I said as I turn away from her, I went to the soda fountain and started filling a cup with water, “Do you want ice with that?” she nodded from the window.
I had a sense that if grandma saw what I was doing she would snap the window close on this woman’s hands and scream about how she warn me about these kind’s of strangers. She wouldn’t be just screaming like normal she’d be screaming to be heard over the woman screaming outside the window about her hands being caught. But what did I care she wasn’t there and none of my friends text back or answer there phones, and this woman was the only person around for miles to talk to.
I push a lid on the drink and grabbed a straw, “Here’s your water.” I sighed because I knew once I gave this to her I’d be alone again to wallow in my misery, she took it and remove the lid letting it drop to the floor, she sipped from it so delicately, if only I was more of a lady like her then maybe Ron would of never left me for that blond.
“Is something wrong dear?” she lower the cup from her purple lips.
“No, sorry,” I just realize I was staring at her and I know how it feels to be stared at, you feel like a freak, “It’s just I need to talk to someone about a problem I’m having but everyone I know either doesn’t care, or won’t answer their phones.”
“I understand completely, but it’s sort of awkward to talk through this window do you mind if I come in for a moment?” I lean back and stared at her she’s tall, and thin, she didn’t look stronger than me, if she started anything I could probably take her but then again what if she had a knife or gun under her cloak.
“I don’t know,” her face turn hurt, “It’s just you’re a stranger and well my grandma said not to trust strangers…” I trailed off because she looked like she was gonna cry. “How about you emptying your pockets so I can see if you got a weapon on you and if you pass then you can come in.”
“Oh, is that all,” she pulled her cloak back showing the most glamorous dress I’ve ever seen, you could tell this wasn’t some cheap thing you go and buy at the store she must of made it herself. She must of loved purple because this dress was all the shades of purple and even with the bare minimum light the dress glitter and shined like it was in the sunlight. “As you can see I don’t have any pockets to hide weapons in.”
At this point I didn’t care, I was willing to risk my life to get a closer look at that dress, “Meet me around the side door, and I’ll let you in.” I felt like it was a win win for me because I’d be able to load my problems on someone else and see a spectacular dress. I pulled the door open she walked in head held high, “Take a seat,” I gesture over to a booth, a car honked it’s horn over at the window, “I’ll be right back I gotta help this custom, then we can talk.”
“Welcome to Wendy’s how may I help you?” I open the window and that’s when a gun was shove into my face.
Every muscle in my bodied stiffen, “About time you got rid of that woman, I’ve been waiting for ages.” He had a ski mask pulled over his face, “Now if you don’t mind I would like to have some ten’s, twenty’s, fifty’s, and all the Hundred’s you got,” sweat broke out on my forehead, “Now hurry up sweet heart before I decide to take you too.”
I turn to the cash register I automatically push buttons, I didn’t know what to do, my phone was on the front counter. I couldn’t signal that purple woman either, she took a back booth, so I just started pulling money out of the drawer.
“What’s going on?” I turn my head and saw her standing there with her cup under the water at the soda fountain.
“Tell her I’m your boss, who decided to come by for some change, and remember I’ll kill you both.” He press the gun into my side.
“It’s just my boss he needs to take the money to the drop off box at the bank.” I my voice shook with pain.
“Sir,” she raise her head removing her hood, “remove that gun from her side.”
“Why don’t you just stay out of this.” he growled at her.
“You know you have no bullets in you gun,” his blue eye’s open wide in shock, “so take your gun and leave, before I call the cops and report a robbery done by George Sloane.”
“How did you know?” he ripped his masked off, there is his blue eyes, dirty blond hair, he was the manager of this Wendy’s.
“George!” I was pass scared, I was angry, “How dare you scare me half to death like that I thought I was gonna die!” I wanted to rip all of his blond hair out by the roots. “I’m calling the police!” I marched over to my phone but she didn’t let me have my phone.
“If you tell anyone Cindy, sure I’ll go to jail but you’ll get fired for allowing this woman in at night and no restaurant will ever hire you again and I know that’s all you know how to do.” he shouted from the window.
I turn back and stare at his pathetic girn he was right, I needed the money if I was gonna keep paying for my college.
“Of course I could over look this and not say anything if you would keep silence about this little incident.” His smile was crooked just like his sense of humor.
“Fine!” I snapped at him, “Just get out of here and never pull anything like this again near or at me!” I threw a cup at him as he drove away.
“I should of call the police.” I stomped my foot, I felt so mad.
“Just relax dear it’s over with now the best thing to do is to move on, go over to the back booth in the corner and I’ll be right there when I get more water.” she turn back to the soda fountain.
I walked back to the booth, it was the darkest corner of the lobby but I didn’t mind I didn’t want her staring at my red face. I sat down in the cushion seat I looked out the window, cars were driving past but no one slowed down to the drive thru. Thank goodness I didn’t want to deal with anyone right now, removing my Wendy’s hat I could see how flat my hair was in the reflection of the glass. I ran my fingers through my brown hair to fluffy it up a bit.
She set two waters on the table and push one toward me, “I thought you might need something after what happened.”
I know I should of refuse the drink because I don’t know if she put something in it or not but, at this moment I didn’t care, it felt good to have some one care about me (but much later I would regret it) “Thank you.” I took a gulp only to be surprise that it wasn’t water it was cola, but I thought who cares it tastes good to have the fizzy of the drink go down my throat. “Well where should I start?”
“My name is Aubrey,” she remove her cloak even in the darkest corner of the lobby her dress shine and glimmered uncontrollably, I went to tell her my name, “don’t tell me it’s Cindy, correct?”
“Yeah, how did you know?” she was loaded with surprises.
“It wasn’t that hard of a guess, your name tag spell it out perfectly.” she laughed as I reached down and stared at it.
I thought I loss that today and here I was wearing it the whole time what an idiot I am. I was glad it was dark because I was blushing and people say I look like a stop light when I do. “Oh yeah,” I said stupidly, “I have just one question how did you know there were no bullets and that it was George?” I was sure she’s never seen him in her life.
“He has many friends that are my friends and they told me about his little escapade, so I decided to put an end to his foolishness.” Aubrey pushed her hair back, sending a glimmer down her dress.
Maybe it was her glimmering dress or the drink, but I felt suddenly tired and staring at her dress made me think of an old night light I use to own, it was so peaceful that when you star at it you would hop on the dreamland express and be out like a light.
“Cindy,” I snapped out of my thought, “tell me what happened with your boyfriend.” she took a sip of her water.
“Uhh,” I tried to remember if I mention anything about Ron to her, but I decided who cares as long I get it out of my system, “Ron was my boyfriend we would go out a lot, we did everything together but then I notice he would say he was working when he wasn’t.” I gripped my cup tighter even though I felt sleepy and relax, I could feel my anger pulsing through me, “I follow him in my car one day and found him out with this blond, which doesn’t make sense to me he’s a red head, red heads don’t normally go for blonds!” I wasn’t sure if that was true but I didn’t care, “He told me that blonds have more fun and that brunettes are boring… Just because I’m a brunette doesn’t mean I’m boring!” I was shouting now.
“Hush now,” Aubrey laid a hand on mine and right away I felt calmer, I release the cup, her dress glimmer some more making me feel like I was back in my bedroom with my night light, “Wouldn’t it be better if there was world where you didn’t have to worry about college or boyfriends?”
I nodded my head, “Yeah it would be whole lot better, sometimes I think it would be better to live like back then, all the men I read about were loyal to their mates and that’s a real man.”
“Here,” she pick my cup up and pulled it to her self, she placed her hand over it. Her nails glowed and sparkles sprinkled down in my cup, she swished it around then handed it back to me, “Drink this, and I promise all the troubles of this world won’t brother you anymore.”
Every part of my body was screaming not to, but some how my bodied just couldn’t refuse I felt like someone else was in charge. I brought it up to my lips, Aubrey smile grew that’s when my bodied stop and smell the inside the cup, “What did you put in this? Is it a drug?” my mind didn’t want to process that she appear to have powers.
“I’m shock do think I would honestly drug you?” Aubrey said sadly, she reached out and touch my hand.
My bodied felt a tingle and right when I was going to ask another question my hand put the drink to my mouth and I automatically swallowed. I didn’t feel sleepy or relax any more, “What did you do!” I shouted and push up from the table.
“Nothing you didn’t want dear, now relax and let go, it would go better for you.” she watched as I stumble to the front and grabbed my phone off the counter, Aubrey walk up and gently took the phone from me, “Just go to sleep trust me you’ll feel better.” I stumble back from her, I tripped on my own feet and landed on my back, I barely felt the hit to the floor.
“You’ll be happy soon,” Aubrey reached her hand over me, blue flames emerge from it and engulf me in their warmth.
My bodied felt like it was moving, floating on air. I could hear Aubrey voice saying, “Let go and rest.” Then everything went black…
