Dragon's for Keeps

Part 5

“I’m going to speak with Vanessa for a minute,” queen Aubrey gracefully walked toward the back hall, “You wait by my throne until I return, understand Aurelia.” Lou Ann nodded her head remembering not to speak, “Good girl, I knew you would fit in faster than the others.”

Lou Ann watched as she disappeared down the hall, she was relieved to be alone. She was so afraid of making a mistake, if only she knew the rules. It wasn’t fair of her hitting first and explaining later, all her life people have treated her that way. Either they treated her wrong because of her weight or ignore her, now that she had time to regret, it was her mother that was the only one who treated her right. Why did she had to trust this woman who said she could magically help her lose weight, she was feeling fat and ugly that day. She went to the the park and started walking on the path hoping to lose a couple of pounds. That’s when a woman wearing a purple sweat suit started walking by her, she encourage her that she can do it.

That’s when both of them took off running Lou Ann felt good someone was actually making her feel as if she could lose this weight. This time sweating and getting tired felt worth it instead of useless. Then they took a break they sat by the pond breathing hard, trying to catch there breath, wouldn’t it be great if you never had to worry about weight? the woman asked her. Lou Ann agreed, here have some water she toss Lou Ann a water bottle. She took a drink unknowingly about what it was about to do, then was awaken in a cage surrounded by dragons.

I was so stupid I didn’t obey the number one rule, don’t talk to strangers, I learn that before I went to school she thought. Aubrey marched into the room snapping her out of her thoughts, “Come with me I am tired and need my rest.” Aubrey went over to the wall it was solid, then she shot blue flames, they lick the wall making a purple door appear. The door creaked open there inside is a bedroom, “It wouldn’t do any good if the whole kingdom knew where I slept now would it, and you would do good to stay silent about this if you value your vocal cords.” she growled.

Lou Ann just nodded and followed her through the door it snapped shut and locked itself, she was amazed, there was a large bed in the center of the room, with white sparkling sheets. The blanket look like the queens scales, the room was huge. There was a dressing table with a mirror, there were necklaces hanging on peg’s next to the table. The sunlight came through the only window making the necklaces jewels shine and glimmer. There was plenty of perfume on her table, Lou Ann saw that the closet door was open there was so many different color clothes, she was sure it was all silk. There was a beautiful sliver rug covering the floor, it was so thick and soft like walking on a cloud if you knew what that was like.

 Aubrey crawled between her sheet’s and settled down for a nap. Lou Ann wasn’t sure what she was suppose to do while she slept, then she notice a pink door at the other end of the room. She didn’t have long to wonder what was behind this door, the door slammed open. “Mom!” a pink dragon bounce in, her scales were more beautiful than Aubrey’s. Her horns were gold to where the queens were black, and her claws are copper, and her eye’s are silver. “Mom! Mom! Mom!” she continue to bounce up and down near Aubrey’s bed.

“What is it dear?” she tried to say calmly.

“You said you were going to teach me how to get to that other world I’m ready for step two!” she was so excited she slashed her tail back and forth.

“Not now dear,” Aubrey slipped her head under her pillow, “Mommy’s tired.”

“But mom that’s what you said yesterday!” she whined.

“Melinda, I just got back from that world and I’m feeling drain, but I do have someone for you to practice your happy spell on.” she pointed a claw at Lou Ann’s direction.

“Yay!” she shouted, “Hi my names Melinda what’s yours?” she bounced over to her.

Lou Ann almost answer, but then she remember Aubrey was there and she couldn’t speak in front of her at all without her permission. She bowed down low and waited, “Very good Aurelia you are learning fast.” she wait for a while.

“Oh come on mom I want you to quiz me on the happiness spell, so tell her she can answer already.” she said irritated.

“That’s one thing you must learn never miss a chance to teach someone the rules,” she smiled proudly, “you may speak, Aurelia.”

“Aww mom you ruin it she was suppose to tell me her name herself.” she sighed.

“Well,” Lou Ann bit her lip she wanted so bad to tell Melinda her true name, but she held her tongue, “it is Aurelia.” she wanted to talk to this dragon so bad, she’s the only friendly dragon she met besides Ruby.

“Enough talk Melinda do your spell so I can go back to sleep.” Aubrey yawned.

“Alright Aurelia this is all you have to do look into my eye’s that’s all,” Lou Ann knew what this was she saw it done on Cindy, but she knew refusing meant a punishment she felt Aubrey's eye’s  glaring at her. She reluctantly looked into her eye’s, right away Lou Ann felt at peace like all of her worries were lifted from her. The scales were growing around her face, down her neck and up her front legs, there was this voice telling her to snap out of it but it also felt right. Then it stop Melinda look away, shaking her head. “Man, how do you do hold that mom that was hard.”

“You almost got it dear, look Aurelia look as if she enjoyed it,” it was true she did enjoyed it, there was still a smile on her face, but it slowly disappeared as she remember every thing she was suppose to worry about, “Now why don’t you take her into the room and keep practicing, mommy needs her rest.” she bury herself in her blanket.

Melinda rolled her eye’s she felt it was unfair but then again she respected her mother’s wishes. “COME ON AURELIA.” she spoke loud on purpose, Lou Ann followed her through her pink door. Melinda’s door did the same as the queen’s it locked it self as soon as they were through. “I understand it’s a draining process and everything but at least she could kept her promise and taught me something today, what do think?” Aurelia, just stare at her she was sure that saying anything against the queen had a big punishment at the end of it. “You can talk without permission to me you know the those stupid rules my mother has are point less, she thinks it creates law and order but it only creates fear.”

“Thank you, I’ve been wanting to talk to you,” Lou Ann felt close to tears, “you’ve been so nice.”

“You must really want to be a dragon uh, that other world must be terrible, no wonder mom’s so worn out.” she look sympathetic.

“No my world has it’s ruff spot’s it wasn’t perfect, but it has everyone and thing that I love in it.” tears were streaming down her face.

“Don’t cry I didn’t mean to insult your world,” Melinda grabbed a hankie off her dresser that matched her mother’s, “here use this.”

Lou Ann blew into it noticing it was made out of silk, “Thank you, it’s just I miss my mother so much, I want to go home.” she felt great finally saying what she wanted to say.

“If you want to go home why don’t you just tell mom she’ll let go home but most dragons decide to stay here.” she tilted her head to one side.

“Vanessa asked to go home but she locked her away into something called a iron cast… what is that?” Melinda look worry.

“That is only suppose to be use on violent prisoners, did this Vanessa get violent?” Melinda tapped her copper claws on her light blue carpet.

“She only got violent when the guards forced her down the hall, she wanted to go home and your mother told them to keep her back there.” Lou Ann shook her head sadly.

“Well how about I send you home if mother isn’t going to do it,” she puffed up proudly, “mother showed me how to open the portal to that world so tell me what the last area you were at looked like and I’ll open it for you.”

Lou Ann’s heart soar she was about to go home and be free from the wicked dragons, “There are tree’s, grass and a cement sidewalk all the way around the park, and a huge pond in the middle. It was in the middle of New York City.”

“New York perfect I’ve open one before in New York, now stand back.” Melinda close eye’s, her eye’s narrowed in concentration. The air before her shimmered Lou Ann watched as tree’s and grass appeared before her, it was a large round portal, she saw everything exactly like she left it. But there was one thing that was different there was her mother, she was in the park yelling Lou Ann’s name. She was looking for her, Lou Ann so full with joy she jump at the portal but it disappeared.

 She landed on rug with a thump, “NO! Bring it back Melinda that was where I had to be!” she started bawling, “My mother’s looking for me please!”

“I’m so sorry but I need the second step in order for you to enter, I thought I could do it I’m so sorry please forgive me.” Melinda was shaking.

Lou Ann stop shouting when she saw how weak it made Melinda, “Are you ok?”

“Yeah this spell is just hard to do I’m not as powerful as mother, not yet anyway.” She look down, “I’m sorry about that but when I get it down I promise to send you back.”

“Thank you Melinda, I know you’ll keep your promise.” Lou Ann said she was happy her mother was looking for her, but felt awful that she was worried.
